Gym Intimidation?

Do you desire to lift weights but any time you get to the gym, you end up sticking with cardio because you’re intimidated by the free weights zone? Many of us have been there. I was there once. I would tell myself “today is the day I lift weights!” and I would get there…and change my mind.

I went with my brother about three times in a 2 month span, and he helped give me some confidence to actually enter the free weights area. I was still hit or miss on actually lifting when I’d go though.

And then I found Zoe. I bought the full body gym bundle during a sale, and watched the videos included in the ebooks like 5 times, hit the gym, and sat in the locker room another 5-10 minutes watching that day’s workout before going out to the floor.

Having that structure helped immensely. I have a baseball hat from Victoria’s Secret and I wore that to help “hide”, tune others out. I didn’t always wear headphones, but those helped a lot, too.

But what helped the most? Simply going into the free weights zone, and lifting the weights. Consistently. I went five days a week.

Secret though? I avoided the squat rack for a good 3 months, until one day I was tired of lifting the EZ bars over my head to do squats.

Anyway, here is my top 6 things, in no particular order, except for #1, to help overcome that gymidation.

  1. Consistency is key
  2. Wear a hat
  3. Use headphones
  4. Wear gym clothes you feel comfortable in (second guessing your clothes always plays with your confidence and can make you feel more intimidated)
  5. Write out a routine for the day (or follow one like I did; tons of free ones online, or buy one)
  6. Watch videos of any or all exercises beforehand (or even during…I have many times, especially if during a movement it feels off, I watch a video real quick. Some movements just feel awkward, like cable rope pull throughs, until you get use to them)

Best of luck! You got this!
